Assess the ground before settling the solution
An uneven surface can have more than one cause. Existing construction, roots, ground movement and drainage all need considering in relation to the proposed work. The useful question is what the garden needs underneath the finish, as well as what you want to see on top.
We look at the connections between levels, access to the different sections and where water collects. Tell us about any drains or services you know of and previous work that changed the garden. Photographs taken in wet conditions can help explain a recurring problem.
For lawn changes, the soil and intended use matter. For routes and sitting areas, the width, edge detail and meeting points with existing surfaces need attention. The landscaping hub explains services including turfing, garden drainage and garden levelling.
